Building an ESG Obligations Register: What Actually Applies to You
An ESG obligations register maps applicable EU and national legislation per country of operation, then attaches owners, controls, and evidence per obligation, determined by sector, size, legal form, products, and operating countries, since the combination of applicable rules is genuinely unique to each company rather than something answerable with a general industry rule of thumb. Mapping it properly requires checking each of these factors individually rather than assuming a peer company's obligations match your own.
Why sector and size alone don't determine your obligations
Two companies in the same sector and similar size can face different obligations because they operate in different countries, sell different products, or have a different legal structure, each of which can independently trigger or exempt a specific rule. There's no shortcut around checking your own specific combination.
What "attaching owners, controls, and evidence" actually means
For each identified obligation, naming who is responsible for meeting it, what specific control demonstrates it's being met, and what evidence would be produced on request, turning a legal requirement into an operational, auditable responsibility rather than a line on a compliance checklist.
Why the register needs an owner of its own, not just per obligation
Legislation changes, and a register that isn't actively maintained becomes inaccurate within a year regardless of how well it was built initially. Someone needs to own keeping the register itself current, separate from who owns each individual obligation inside it.
Compliance Without Competitive Advantage Is a Wasted Obligation
We build an obligations register that stays current, close the gap between policy and practice, and design it so the board can actually prove it's in control, while the same effort strengthens your supplier data, cost position, and customer story.
